Long History: Founded in 1958, Mudanjiang Normal University (MNU) undergoes four development stages: Nen’jiang Department of Northeast Agricultural Institute (1958-1964); Bei’an Teachers’ College (1964-1965); Ning’an Teachers’ College (1965-1970); and Mudanjiang Normal University (1970-). In September 1995, the school moved to Mudanjiang City, ending the history of running schools in the rural area in the past 40 years. After nearly 60 years’ development, MNU has become the largest provincial undergraduate university in the southeastern region of Heilongjiang province with the most comprehensive strength, being the core base for regional basic education research, applied and innovative personnel training, Russia-oriented business and trade personnel training and senior technical personnel training. MNU passed the National Undergraduate Teaching Level Assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2001; and gained an “outstanding” result in 2009. It offers both bachelor’s degree as well as master’s degree.
Solid Accumulation: MNU is located in the scenic Mudanjiang City, a national “excellent” tourist city. The campus is a “Garden-like” unit at provincial level, occupying an area of 831.2 thousand square meters with the total building area coverage of 421 thousand square meters. The total amount of fixed assets is 971 million Yuan and the gross value of teaching and research equipment and instruments is 161 million Yuan. With a building area of 20.3 thousand square meters and equipped with an advanced digital library and the international online literature novelty retrieval system, the library has a collection of over 2.4 million volumes (including 615 thousand electronic books) and more than 3,000 Chinese and foreign periodicals; MNU has built The History Museum, Animal and Plant Specimens Museum, Language and Characters Museum, Basic Education Materials Museum and other teaching venues, among which, The History Museum and Animal and Plant Specimens Museum are the provincial science popularization bases in Heilongjiang Province; Language and Character Museum is the provincial language library and audio language resources research center; Basic Education Materials Museum is the first teaching materials research venue nationwide.
Faculty and Specialty: MNU has a faculty of 1,264 teachers and workers, including 807 full-time teachers, among which 396 professors and associate professors, 670 staff with doctoral and master degree. There are 2 experts who enjoy the special bonus from the State Council and provincial government and 11 distinguished teachers at state-level or provincial-level. There are 57 undergraduate specialties, 8 Class-A master’s degree conferment programs, 34 Class-B master’s degree conferment programs and 3 categories of specialized master’s degrees (including 17 fields). Its branches of learning cover 10 fields: engineering, science, agriculture, law, literature, education, history, economics, management and arts, etc. MNU opens its arms for students all over China and its present enrollment consists of 16, 000 undergraduates, MA students and overseas students.
Distinct Features: There are 1 state-level characteristic specialty, 1 state-level comprehensive reform pilot specialty, 1 Center for International and Regional Studies of the Ministry of Education, 3 provincial comprehensive teaching reform pilot specialties, 7 provincial first-class key specialties, 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 provincial high-quality teaching teams, 14 provincial quality courses, 1 provincial excellent open course, 1 provincial college student literature creation base, 1 provincial innovative experimental field for foreign language talent training model. MNU has 2 provincial key branches of subject, 1 provincial branch of subject with special feature, 2 provincial key laboratories, 2 provincial research and development centers for engineering technology, 2 provincial demonstration bases for postgraduate training and innovation, 1 state-level undergraduate extracurricular experimental field, 1 provincial undergraduate extracurricular experimental field. In recent years, MNU undertakes or participates in over 900 scientific research projects, including projects of the National Natural Science Project, the National Social Science Project, the academic research projects of the Ministry of Education, etc. More than 700 scientific research achievements are awarded, and 320 papers are included in three key retrievals (SCI, EI, ISTP).
Connotation Construction: With the support of China Anti-Japanese Aggression United Army Research Center, Bohai Cultural Research Center and other scientific and research centers, the university makes full use of the advantage of Beidahuang Culture, Bohaiguo Cultural Research, minority language and local dialect protection, and strives to build a humanistic and social science base with regional characteristics. Focusing on local key fields and key industries, the university makes full use of its Super-hard Material Key Laboratory, Medicine and Food Research and Development Center, Research Center of Edible Fungi, and promotes the collaborative innovation between school and entrepreneur, school and local government, and among different schools, actively providing the platform for production, education and scientific research. The National Training Plan, Replacement Training, Warm-heart Class, Psychological Counselling program provoke great favorable social feedback. MNU has fully implemented the plan to serve Mudanjiang City. The establishment of University Union and the collaboration among universities as well as social practices, such as Bohai Cultural Art Troupe, Four times into the Community, Volunteer Service, greatly activate the cultural and artistic atmosphere of Mudanjiang region.
International Communication: MNU serves as the base for many state-level international exchange platform: “Chinese Government Scholarship Students” enrollment school, Australian Studies Center, Sino-Russian University Student Exchange Base, the Russian Center, HSK test center, etc. Close relations and academic exchange has been established with up to 75 foreign universities, colleges and research institutes. The joint program with South Korea Chouzhou University, Russia Ussuriysk National Teachers College has been approved by the Ministry of Education. MNU achieves mutual credit recognition with many Russian universities. It is a provincial base for Russia-oriented economic and trade talent training.
Excellent Achievements: In recent years, the university is awarded such titles by the Ministry of Education, the National Federation of Trade Unions, Chinese Youth League Committee and Heilongjiang Province as the “Advanced Unit for Disciplinary Inspection and Supervision Work of the National Education System”, “National Staff Education and Training Demonstration Unit”, “National May-fourth Red-flag Youth League Committee”, “National Advanced Unit for College Students Volunteer Summer Three-rural Social Practice Activities”, the “Model of Civilized Units of Heilongjiang”, “Demonstration Unit of Clean and Honest Culture Construction in Heilongjiang province”, the “Advanced Unit for Construction of Teachers Ethics in Heilongjiang Education System”, the “Advanced Unit for Student Affairs of Higher Learning Institutes of Heilongjiang Province”, “Ten-Outstanding Volunteers Service Unit of Heilongjiang Province”, etc. MNU has trained more than 100,000 talents for basic education and industry and they have made important contributions to education and economic and social development.
2018 marks the 60th anniversary of MNU. After six decades’ development, the school has formed the great pioneering spirit of “hard work, selfless dedication, self-improvement and inspirational pursuit”. MNU will faithfully carry out the development ideas of “adhering to one main line, exploring two paths, promoting three big strategies and implementing ten projects” formulated by the 6th party congress, and adhere to the policy of “stabilizing the foundation, improving quality, making overall plans, highlighting characteristics, strengthening performance, and promoting conservation”. MNU will continue to deepen the comprehensive reform, strengthen the connotation construction and commit itself to the construction of a high-level normal university with distinctive local characteristic.
